Welcome to the website for the Dick Jones Special, an amazing fifty year old homebuilt racer that originated in Compton, California, in 1955. Sponsored by Transitainer NZ Ltd., this car can be seen at historic and classic race meetings throughout the country. In April we went to Manfeild. We were at the classic Auckland Domain Hillclimb on May 7th, and spent a very wet day at Pukekohe on May 14th. In September we were back at Pukekohe, and susequently Taupo for the very first time. As the rest of the year unfolds we’ll update this site to let you know where and when you can see the Dick Jones Special close-up. Download our videos too, one of the Auckland Domain Hillclimb, one very wet lap at Pukekohe on Mothers Day, and the latest of our best ever lap at Pukekohe, recorded on September 16th.

Dick Jones is alive and well

Just when we thought the trail might be running a little cold, we were contacted by Dick’s family who report that he is alive and well in Colorado. I rang the man himself and we chatted for over two hours (on my cellphone!) as he began to tell me how he wanted to build a car that looked “italian.” He and his friends, including Jim Byers (who subsequently developed his own SR100 sports car bodies after Dick moved to Colorado) created the full size “buck” in Dick’s family garage in the weekends. Dick got the first body, which was red, and then they made more of them for each of the friends that had worked on the project together.
Have a read of the History section for more on the background of the inspired engineer that created this dream car when he was just 20 years old! We really enjoy getting our old race car out and seeing it on the track, and we’re only too happy to stop and chat with you while we’re there. Hope we see you again soon.If you want to enquire about freighting your dream car to or from anywhere in the world, click here to go the Transitainer site.
